The new Spanish branch in Sant Cugat del Vallès, designed by Josep Mias and inaugurated in 2011, expertly combines the use of materials and attention to energy consumption.
The glass ball structure was made particularly efficient by an in-depth study of the position of the entire glazed surface relative to the sun’s rays.
A special solar shield made of aluminium panels is wrapped around the glazed surface to the south, allowing light in during the winter and protecting against direct sunlight in the summer.
The result: more visual comfort and significant energy savings. The large central patio, overlooked by all of the building’s storeys, allows natural light to reach the basement areas, collects and conserves hot air in winter and acts as a ventilation shaft during the hotter months.
